About Vampira

Vampira was the groundbreaking horror host persona of Finnish-American actress Maila Nurmi, who debuted on Los Angeles television in 1954 and created the template for all glamorous horror hosts who followed. Her impossibly cinched waist (reportedly 17 inches with corset), black fingernails, and deadpan delivery of macabre humor made her an instant sensation, though her show lasted only one season due to station politics. Nurmi created the character after attending a costume party dressed as Charles Addams' ghoulish cartoon women, and Addams himself praised her interpretation while the Addams Family creators later acknowledged her influence. Despite her brief original run, Vampira's aesthetic directly inspired Elvira and countless other horror personalities, cementing her legacy as the mother of horror hosting.
